That’s not the entire truth. At some point marginal cost versus other options comes into play, especially if I’m in a business with generally fixed rates for work (like outsourcing/contracting.) The OP should negotiate up (especially if they have data on comparable pay they can use), but what others in the market with comparable skill are willing to take also matters.
