I think this is fascinating and am going to check out the documentary when I have time. One big reason is that I love old news footage and when I tried to track down some big local events from the SF Bay Area, I was either unable to or found that they were prohibitively expensive. this is really neat!

The archive mentioned here was supposed to be picked up by the Internet Archive. I'm not sure of current status but it's worth looking into. The Vanderbilt Television News Archive doesn't provide footage to the public, but it does include rundowns of national news programmes for every broadcast episode dating to 1965. As a tool for researching "top-of-the-news" items in text-searchable form, that's quite useful.
