When a system relies on "good people" and where "bad people" ruin it, the system itself isn't great, it's broken.
- asdff 5y agoThere is no system that can't be co-opted and ruined by bad people.
- mixmastamyk 5y agoUS Constitution, first thing to come to mind.
- viburnum 5y agoUS constitution is bad though. Nobody is good enough to make it work.
- mixmastamyk 5y agoIt works when folks aren’t hysterical.
- sneak 5y agoSlavery (as well as the continued and sustained widespread lack of due process/equal protection) stands as a great proof of asdff's point given your example.
- mixmastamyk 5y agoYes, though slavery was not addressed (on purpose) in the document for a century.
- barry-cotter 5y agoThe US constitution has been gutted and reconstructed multiple times. The idea it really constrains is a joke. Every seventy years or so there’s a massive change in how things are actually run. The first change was the Constitution itself, taking over from the Articles of Confederation, the second when the states were rendered subordinate with the War On Idiots Who Wanted to Keep Slavery, the third the New Deal, when the Commerce Clause was rendered a joke, then the sixties with the extraordinary growth of the administrative state. The US Constitution can’t stop politicians from doing what they want. The Constitution doesn’t give the President the power to declare war unilaterally. They took it. Power is not restrained by paper, but by other power.
