I use the Dell 24" panel in portrait for coding. It's awesome -- top is browser or music listener, whichever is necessary, middle is IDE, and bottom is console. If you were to stretch all the code over the whole screen, I agree, it might be a bit much -- at most, 60% of the height of the screen is a single window/code at any time.
