I did the exact opposite. I think I've told my story on here already.
April 2020 I gave up on CA's leadership and bailed out of the state. Best decision ever.
I bought a 16x7 trailer that's extra tall. Ramp door. $6200 brand new. Filled it with stuff, pulled it 2,000 miles and put everything in a storage unit. I looked at 16 houses in 2 days, made an offer, got an accepted offer and pulled the trailer back, empty.
That house fell through in the home inspection. No vapor barrier behind the brick and manufactured stone. Whole east side of the house would have to come off to just inspect the extent of the damage. The owner gave me an attitude so I bailed. I kept my plans, however.
Memorial day weekend, 2020, I had rented a 26' uhaul and a car hauler. $5,400 one way out of CA, and keep in mind I was ahead of virtually everyone else doing the same thing. I went to Tahoe (Incline Village, actually) to rent the uhaul on the Nevada side. Actual cost, $3,300. Look at my big brain.
I loaded that uhaul, put my minivan on the car hauler, loaded the minivan, loaded my trailer, and hooked it up to my land cruiser. I then moved my family of 5 2,000 miles into a rental. Put most stuff in the storage unit / garage of the rental and started looking for houses. Found a great place, passed the home inspection, bought a great spot. Moved my stuff out of storage/the garage and into my new place in July and I've been here ever since!
I've gotten rid of about 4 substantial items and added 3 new ones. Things like entertainment centers, kitchen table (have two dining rooms now, with a real formal, so I needed one of those) so it worked out.
Fuel budget for a 6k+ lbs land cruiser pulling a 8,000 lbs trailer is something like $650, in 2020 gas prices, each way. Even pulling it back empty is almost the same due to the lack of aerodynamics on the trailer.

- throwaway0a5e 5y agoDon't forget the negative externality. He's using those SV monopoly bucks to turn some other economy upside down. Like littering in the economic park.
- gruez 5y agoSpending money in a local economy is a "negative externality" now?
- throwaway803453 5y agoI am glad your move worked. But for others I'd advise to not underestimate the importance of your life's continuity of narrative. Moving to NV broke that since it was simply because of lower taxes and that's not meaningful enough. When I lived in the Bay Area I had an identity, long time college buddies, neighbors who would knock on my door, I was a member of the tech and scientific research community, an angel investor, and I had visitors since so many people pass through the Bay Area. Now all I am is that rando millionaire next door who WFH and likes skiing. Every morning I wake up and I do not recognize the man in the mirror. I disintegrated into a collection of discontinuous random stories that feel like they happened to someone else. It easily diminished my productivity by 10% which means this move didn't save me money. Now that I want to move back to Cali the homes are priced much higher than when I left. Beware.
- setr 5y agoOne of the issues with moving to NV is you get trapped by the cheap pricing — it’s really hard to argue that you’re willing to move to CA for 2.5x the price for the same house... far worse when you look at the north. But from San Francisco, you can basically move anywhere — am I willing to put up with Virginia’s remoteness for 700k? Probably.
- throwaway803453 5y agoFor the record, my NV house is $230/sqft and my target CA home is priced ~$1300/sqft. That's 5.6X and arguably worth it.
- HeyLaughingBoy 5y agoNot having a point of reference, I did the math on my house using the most recent valuation. Built in early 2000's and sitting on 10 acres of Minnesota farmland. Came to under $150/sqft. Western prices are insane!
- qshaman 5y agoYeah, thats the reason I wont move from the west coast, unless it becomes unbearable. Most people here would downvote you, just for suggesting human interactions are necessary, but yes, in places like SV, Seattle, NY, you get to meet smart and interesting people, learn a lot about the industry, life in general, I also get how some folks would love to make 300K in the middle of nowhere, paying none to little rent, and enjoy being the richest person in a small town, but I think there is a reason why most of the population is concentrated in a few cities.
