Virtuozzo’s Mature Linux Distribution VzLinux Now Available to Public
- yjftsjthsd-h 5y agoSo it's another CentOS 8 replacement, with what sounds like a nice converter tool. I don't see specific reasons to favor this over Alma or Rocky, but more options generally strikes me as good (with some caveats around duplicated effort).
- gogopuppygogo 5y agoVirtuozzo has big dollars behind it. Probably going to be a stronger contender for longevity than Rocky.
- znpy 5y agovirtuozzo looks like the kind of people that sell a linux distro but you cannot download it unless after you paid it. no centos user would be interested in that. if you are okay with paying, you might as well pay red hat and get the best in class.
- mbroemme 5y agoSplintering and fragmentation is somewhat a problem in Linux ecosystem, but on the other side competition is always good. Linux as a whole (kernel + various applications) supports wide range of use cases (IoT, hosting, desktop, mobile devices and more) and there is always room for building a Linux distribution optimizing specific use cases. One of the biggest gaps with CentOS in the past was missing conversion from previous versions to latest one (e.g. 7->8). This is one of the biggest requirements to get rid of "major version re-install process" and it is one of the strongest focus areas of VzLinux. Right now such conversion can be done without downtime for CentOS 8 -> VzLinux 8 and in particular case of system containers running on-top of Virtuozzos' containerization product, it supports mass conversion without access to container from inside, dry-run, rollback in case of errors and fully unattended conversion. The same - beside conversion without downtime - will be supported in near future for CentOS 7 -> VzLinux8. So can be perfectly used for large scale environments with big amounts of environments to convert them in scheduled maintenance windows.
- Datagenerator 5y agoAppreciation of the stabilized BSD operating systems increased. NetApp and other big brand products are FreeBSD based for good reasons. The drama of everything changing 'Microsoft style' is infectious to Linux ecosystems. Pulling the plug on CentOS and Freenode within just one year can be seen as an effort to destabilized some Open communities. But we will become stronger in few years time once everybody sees the centralized snap packages, git repositories and communication channels has been used against the essential freedoms Open software gave us all.
