I think it's important to note here that new technologies that have the potential for oppression can be used not only by authoritarian governments but by liberal-democratic ones as well (see: CIA programs, Snowden leaks, etc) and private companies.
- excalibur 5y agoAuthoritarianism and democracy are not mutually exclusive.
- rrrrrrrrrrrryan 5y agoAuthoritarianism does imply reductions in democratic voting. Democracy and the erosion of human rights are not mutually exclusive, which may be what you meant.
- unishark 5y agoLiberal democracy has that liberal part though, which means rights and freedom and is pretty clearly in opposition to authoritarianism.
- glial 5y agoSure, but there is a strong current trend towards illiberal democracy throughout the world (Brazil, Hungary, Poland, arguably USA).
