That said, ocean life is still a shadow of it's Devonian reef glory, and land animals have never reached the dizzying heights of the Cretaceous again, and probably never will. And as far as we know, intelligent life only evolved once, and we don't have time to run the whole tape again start to finish if we get this wrong.
