Cars kills deer by roads just like wolves kill deer by roads, why don’t deer learn to naturally avoid roads because of the cars?
- rektide 5y agoI'd guess it's a matter of timescales, & learnable intent. Deer have lots of experience with cars & they usually aren't that scary/deadly. Huge whizzing things that seem to, for the most part ignore them. Any given car is around for less than a minute, before it goes it's way. They show little particular fascination with the deer. They don't chase deer into the woods or whatever. Cars are boring, with the exception of their fantastic speed & bright lights. Wolves, on the other hand, I can imagine as rather somewhat more terrifying hunters. The experience of being hunted is active, meaningful, happens over time. A wolf doesn't just hit you and run off, it attacks a family member & claims the kill. It chases you through the woods once you start to flee. There is intent & method to what happens, there is slowness & deliberation. Nature's dance is on display here, a drama playing out, and that is a learnable experience, for those that survive.
