Got a Trek Xcaliber 8 this year and the 1x drivetrain turned out to be like godsend. I can climb much better, not much hassle while cleaning/mantaining the bike and it's a little less weight from it. If any, 1x drivetrains would de-emphasize going on flat terrain - sometimes you feel like that 30x11 ratio falls too short for a flat road.
