3,353 Census blocks in Washington State in which all residents are under 14
- wrycoder 5y agoIf the census was limited to residency, age, and citizenship, these problem would vanish. The census’ purpose is to apportion congressional representation. All other personal characteristics are not the government’s business. The census has become far too invasive. The point of the article is that the government, in trying to obfuscate the highly detailed census data, has made the public version highly inaccurate.
- alisonkisk 5y agoMost of the article is about why your idea is insufficient.
- wrycoder 5y agoInsufficient for what?
- lazyasciiart 5y agoThe obvious solution is to move the redistricting process into the census bureau. Then they have accurate data to draw districts with, the data is not published, and all the dumb state districting cheats are avoided.
- curryst 5y agoI heavily disagree. Drawing districts is inherently political; it has real impact on the outcome of elections. Censuses should be inherently apolitical; they are a reflection of the state of the nation. Combining the two means that either drawing districts will become apolitical, or taking the census becomes political. In situations like this, it's almost always the latter.
- Spivak 5y agoYou don’t deserve the downvotes, the Supreme Court agrees with you. There is no objectively fair way to draw districts. It’s an impossible problem. And this will turn census appointments super political since it will directly affect elections.
- lazyasciiart 5y agoThey already do affect elections. Did you miss the year-long political fight about the census?
