I remember the 90es where Hong Kong action movies were quite the thing. China is quite capable of producing movies for an international audience and as its economy grows its own film industry will eventually match that of Hollywood. I think that is main issue in the long run.
- Proven 5y agoYes, HK movies were a thing when HK wasn't China. But that fact doesn't help your case. The main issue here is China - and Hong Kong in it - is ran by communists. Sure, they just need a bit more money, that's all! Can't wait to learn more about socialist values!
- rurban 5y agoCompletely wrong. Two major problems: First the Hong Kong film industry succeeded because it could evade the Chinese production censorships and only needed the censors red stamp for the final product. Political films were hard to make, romance and action succeeded in the market. But eventually Hollywood succeeded in destroying the HK film industry and going after the Chinese market around Shrek times. Now only the Korean, Indian and French market didn't loose to Hollywood and their banks yet. China itself is totally not capable of producing movies for an international audience, only a few political correct Bejing movies every few years for some festivals plus the eventual dissident or gay film production, which appears on festivals. No chance to match the Korean, japanese, philipino or indian film productions. Either the cheap romantic soap operas, the comedy action flicks, but local markets only. Now we even got huge political backlashes against the top Chinese international productions. Active interferences post-censor stamps will cripple any serious major project. They intervened at many major European film festivals or market screenings. They went after prominent filmmakers and actors, who just disappeared. The Chinese film industry is dead. Nobody will invest anything into a Chinese international production. Many huge co-productions were cancelled lately. They don't care, because they control huge domestic market.
- throwaway4good 5y agoI think you overestimate how much political freedom matters in commercial film making. Most blockbusters are not political. Hollywood wins because that is where the money is. If a film is successful from an alternative center, in general Hollywood will do its own version with bigger budget, better distribution, wellknown actors etc. thus drying the alternative center. China has the internal market to break that. But time will tell.
