In my experience, the only way to be happy most of the time with what you do is possible iff you are intrinsically motivated to do it. If you make money doing it, that is the best case scenario. Else you can make it a hobby, and still be happy. There are no black and white answers, unfortunately, and tradeoffs always apply.
