The popularity of such security services in Brazil and South Africa is the first thing I thought about when I heard "defund the police" last summer. I then told everyone that people will start spending a lot more money on increasing their security, be it fencing or private security forces. It's not a complicated concept.

Immense savings could be had just by realizing that you don’t need to send an officer (fully loaded cost $400k/yr) in a $75,000 car to drive to the scene of a non-violent crime to fill out a form. Defunding the police could easily result in lower costs and better service to citizens, if (and only if) we can get the authoritarian right to stop aggressively defending waste, and we actually work to improve the situation.
