This is an older study but used 37 years of data and I found it interesting to re-read in light of the current Brood X emergence. The long cycles nonetheless appear to have multi-year effects and may themselves have helped induce generational shifts in various wild animal populations. I find it kind of fascinating to contemplate what this kind of emergent effects this sort of regular natural cycle might have on populations where the general individual lifespan might well be shorter than a single cicada cycle.
