I recommend the books “Maxwell’s Demon” and the second edition “Maxwell’s Demon 2”, both edited by Leff and Rex, which collect a lot of the classic literature on this topic. Bottom line is, of course no real machine can break the Second Law, but the Maxwell’s Demon thought experiment helps illuminate the physical nature of information.
