I remember reading that the problem was not that it was some ingenious cipher, as many would believe based on the headlines, but that the Zodiac had made several errors encoding his message. Apparently he had used an algorithm out of an old army handbook, but he botched it so badly that the message would ordinarily be indecipherable. I find it funny that it was only figured out once they took a different perspective and stopped overestimating a mentally ill serial killer.
