Out of curiosity -- if wormholes were mastered -- would that allow us to reach things currently believed to be beyond our cosmic horizon? Or would there already have to be something on both ends?

There has to be something placed on both ends, in all of the scenarios I've read.

  You can get to Alpha Centauri tomorrow... you just have to wait a few years for the other jump gate to get there first.
