Good article, I will say that there's a massive amount of variance depending on the individual.
There's no real way to calculate opportunity cost if you decide to drive an older car and it randomly breaks down on you. Many car owners just decide that they're going to buy a new car when they're current one starts giving them too much trouble. This may even include a car they're making payments on, so you have an entire segment of the population spending $700 to $1,000 a month on driving, even if they're only making like 80k a year.
Buying a nice car is the easiest way to stay poor.
