> Too bad.
I suggest that being forced by necessity to work at a job with no future that doesn't suit your interests or talents is a human career form of technical debt.
Supposedly in ancient Israel, every 50th year was a Jubilee year, in which all debts were cancelled.
How about we accelerate the schedule and every 10 years the government offers unemployment benefits comparable to now, without the need for the fig leaf of economic emergency, and give people a chance to reassess and cancel some of their career debt
- gruez 5y agoWhy would anyone make loans if they know it will be automatically forgiven in less than 10 years? You can kiss any sort of consumer financing (eg. mortgages, student loans) goodbye.
- blacksqr 5y agoI was not suggesting that all loans be forgiven, I was using the Israeli jubilee as an illustrative precedent. I was suggesting that the government offer enhanced unemployment benefits one year out of ten.

- blacksqr 5y agoYou must be fun at parties. No one would leave their job if they thought it was a good fit for them and adequately paid. Only the underutilized and underpaid would be tempted by the benefits of a jubilee unemployment year. We have a lot of those now, which is why the current deal is having such a big impact. If businesses adjusted their approaches to hiring, managing and compensating, we could optimistically expect there to be far fewer in the future.
- gremlinsinc 5y agouh, if you don't pay loans now it goes on your credit, but all records of it move off (except student loans), and after 7 years you can get more loans....
