It's too bad this got buried because this is very interesting.
The one thing I don't get is they talked about changes in the brain after using the device and how that needs to be looked into but they didn't mention in the article here if the participants brain function returned to normal after the experiment.
My hunch is that it did, and probably very quickly. It's hard to imagine, for example, that they'd continue to try to hold a cup of coffee with the prosthetic after just a week of using it and then stopping.
We might compare that to driving a car with a standard and automatic transmission. You don't keep trying to push in the clutch and shift gears when you switch from a manual to an automatic. You might do it once every now and then but you'll always check yourself when you do.
