Ask HN: What do you use your iPad for?
I'm still wondering what people use iPad for and if it's really got a use-case. Especially tech community.
- gregjor 5y agoAn iPad is a computer with a different UI model and some limitations (and some advantages) when compared to a laptop or desktop computer. The main difference is between iPadOS and Windows, MacOS, Linux. Reading Movies and videos Web browsing Writing, spreadsheets Zoom and Google Meets Games Online banking Writing code (remote over ssh) System admin Everything I can do with a laptop.
- fetus8 5y agoI use mine a lot for reading, for work or pleasure. I also almost exclusively edit photos on mine nowadays, as the iPad Pro works incredibly well with direct attached storage or an SD card adapter. Affinity Photo is perfect for the kind of simple editing I like to do.
- bartvk 5y agoTaking notes (with the Pencil), for both business (keeping notes during meetings) and spare time (sketching home improvement, bad poetry). Reading, although I also have an e-reader. Watching Twitch. Playing music from YouTube while cooking.
- ksaj 5y agoMostly I use it for reading and watching CBC Gem and YouTube in bed. Actually, that's pretty much the only time. I've used it for customer presentations, too. But with the pandemic, it's been quite a long time since I've done that.
- amrrs 5y agoDo you think it's a good thing or a bad thing I mean? If there was no iPad would you say your bed time would've been better?
- ksaj 5y agoI don't really get the question. If I prefer not reading or watching videos on it, I don't. Are you asking about whether reading a tablet at night negatively impacts sleep? I think its usefulness is pretty limited that way, since I also have a cell phone with identical features (albeit a smaller screen). So if I didn't have a tablet, I'd just use it or my laptop. In both cases, I sometimes do exactly that. Yes the tablet is easily replaceable. But it's key feature is the screen size and lack of keyboard.
- amrrs 5y agoThank you, the second half of your answer clarifies the question. I've been wanting to buy an iPad or I should say trying to convince me that it'll be helpful but not sure in what waysm
- ksaj 5y agoGot it. Well, I can say I prefer reading off my cell phone screen, and watching videos off the tablet screen. And laptop is annoying because the keyboard always manages to be in the way.
