Some time ago I built a program based on L-systems which describes evolvable animated arthropod bodyplans: https://beyondloom.com/somascape/index.html https://beyondloom.com/somascape/index.html It's less general than the framework described here, but may be of interest to the same kind of person. Every command is a single character sometimes taking an argument to the right if available. A capital letter defines a rule, a lowercase letter references a rule, and a period terminates a rule. Everything is written to tolerate malformed programs, so that mutation always generates a program which remains valid.
