Totally agreed. I have never actually learned anything from a quanta article. They write articles with headlines like "Mathematicians discover new equation!!!"

Totally agreed. I have never actually learned anything from a quanta article.
They write articles with headlines like "Mathematicians discover new equation!!!" and then never even state the equation in the article, instead giving vague allusions to its content and significance.
What even is their target audience? People who like math but not enough to actually be shown any math?
- PaulHoule 5y agoThe kind of math that they are talking about (anything having to do with extreme values) is particularly hard, exotic and (in my mind) still pre-paradigmatic. It is 2021 and physicists still bin events by magnitude, draw a line through the points, announce they discovered a power law. It's like nobody ever taught them there was such as thing as an "estimator"; actually in the 1990s I was doing that too, knew it was half-baked, and found the stats literature wasn't useful to outsiders at all.
