You keep talking about rent seeking behavior. Rent seeking is when an asset is owned or monopolized in such a way that the owner can experiment with putting up prices without delivering any extra value. It is a very secure and sought after position: Bill Gates’ company is successful in the software business, so he buys farmland and timberland. You have every reason to criticize the hiring practices in the software industry, and I’m sure you are at least partially right. But these practices have nothing to do with rent seeking.
