Of course Open Source is underfunded. If you give your work away for $0, people will value the work to be worth $0. The “gift economy” and expecting people to freely give $ doesn’t work in practice. Yes a few do but most don’t. That’s why most successful OSS is developed by people who is paid a salary and work on it as part of their job.
