Tesla on 'autopilot' crashes into deputy's vehicle
- rapjr9 5y agoThis has happened more than once, maybe it is by design? :-) How would a machine learning algorithm get trained to see police vehicles as invisible? Maybe learning to ignore sunlight flashes makes it ignore flashing lights in general?
- rasz 5y agomonocular vision system = no parallax when driving straight into something. Tesla has a front facing camera cluster mounted in the center of the windshield instead of two cameras in windshield corners.
- jobigoud 5y agoThat would apply equally to all categories of vehicles. The grandparent comment is wondering why deputy vehicles seems more involved (don't know if that premise is true).
- foxyv 5y agoI think it's because, a deputy will investigate. Crash into a civilian vehicle and they will exchange insurance info. Crash into the police and you can expect a DUI investigation. Drunk drivers end up crashing into police cars all the time. They just focus on the flashing lights and automatically drive into them. I think it's kind of telling that car autopilot systems drive like drunk people for the most part. Trouble seeing lines or dealing with unexpected situations. Crashing into parked cars and signs. I wonder if there is something missing in computerized neural network design that leaves out something that is impaired in drunk brains? Or maybe our computers are still just too slow.
- avereveard 5y agoOne doesn't usually drive with a monkey see monkey do approach, one drive with a casuality based knowledge of future event from current starting conditions and a combined destination goal with a sense of self preservation Any computer driving approach that just scan the environment and find a path is doomed to fail
- tibbydudeza 5y agoThey should have used Lidar.
- avereveard 5y agoBut here's the thing, the FSD software was always a best effort system, so a class action against its missing delivery wouldn't go anywhere But if he ever comes out and say FSD now needs lidar there would be no escape from the "every car apps now has full self driving hardware" remedies
