- CrazyPyroLinux 5y agoThanks, I had found this once before but couldn't remember the name of it and have been looking ever since. Sounds like it's Socialist for land, but free-market for everything else. Who knows whether that's good or not, but it's at least a different approach and more interesting than the standard "Progressivism driving the speed limit" that we're used to.
- scarmig 5y agoOn the other hand, with Georgism the government needs to know how to assess land value. It does make those assessments now, but it's bound to become more politicized if all revenue is coming from land. I also wonder if practices would emerge to make it impossible to know who to send the tax bill to.
- Turing_Machine 5y ago> I also wonder if practices would emerge to make it impossible to know who to send the tax bill to. Well, you could just publish the list of taxes due and make it the landowner's responsibility to pay it, seizing the land if the taxes aren't paid. I don't think the government would really have to care about who owns the land, as long as the taxes were paid, right? Not advocating Georgism, necessarily. I just don't see this issue as being a real problem with the idea.
- closeparen 5y agoMy condo is assessed as 50% land / 50% improvements. That would rather defeat the purpose of Georgism.
