Just got a DMCA takedown notice from NordVPN
- Gravyness 5y agoAngering the wrong people in the past got you killed, today it just gets you banned from the internet. Edit: I also got banned from instagram recently for no reason, this pratice of self doxxing where they say "Whoops something went wrong and only robots can help you so you must send your id, birth certificate, and firstborn" is becoming the new trend
- n_ary 5y ago> robots can help you so you must send your id, birth certificate, and firstborn" is becoming the new trend I often browse through online hack/leak forums and there are frequently leaks of these "verification information" including selfie with government ids/credit-cards, which is extremely frightening.
- belval 5y agoIt probably wouldn't scale and give an unfair advantage to "pirates", but I think DCMA takedown requests should be handled by actual humans instead of 24/7 bot services such as the one used here. Increasing the bar of entry would force people to actually go after worst offenders instead of just casting the widest net that they can.

Red Points are relying on an automated system which reports content that infringes the copyright, it helps us a lot, but it’s not flawless. We will contact them and Twitter in order to get your post back. I hate hate hate these automated systems :/.
- foepys 5y agoThey are only automated because there is no easy process to counter wrongful DMCA takedown requests. If there were fines like $2,000 for each fraudulent takedown request, all of this automation would go away instantly.
- breakingcups 5y agoThey OUGHT to be, they're filed under the penalty of perjury. Unfortunately this requires the other (wronged) party to expose their personal details and assume potential legal liability by filing a counter-notice. Who can afford legal counsel and potentially getting convicted over a tweet?
- n_ary 5y agoThe sad part of all these "automated systems" is, even when they are wrong, the support is most unhelpful, unless by luck you have a good online following and can raise enough stink. If you are joe-random, you get lost in "we are so sorry but this decision is final, we can't help" or "yeah, we are too lazy to do anything as you can't retaliate, so please suffer for our negligiance". :( Sometimes, I am too afraid to be too online privacy practicing, as getting caught into one of these "automated system" means I will lose access to value/time/information/communication.
