Volkswagen says it can profitably sell a self-driving system for €7 an hour
- ddingus 5y agoFrankly, I see no reason to own a car I do not drive. It will be very interesting to see what the rental scenarios look like.
- nicbou 5y agoIn my experience, getting to the car is the biggest hurdle. Say I need a vehicle to carry something I bought, I first need to take the train to pick up the car. Since I don't live in a central neighbourhood, this takes a while. Availability isn't guaranteed. You can't plan that a car will be there, so you must make room for this uncertainty. You can't trust that there will be a car to drive to an appointment. Rental services in my area are also optimised for short trips. If I want to cover more than 150 kilometres, they become prohibitively expensive. I can't rent those cars to go hiking or to visit people in another city.
- ddingus 5y agoPerhaps self driving will require a very long build out. Given that lay of the land, I would just own a car I drive, would not subscribe, nor want to pay for a retrofit, upgrade. There are a ton of those available at great prices, and that is unlikely to change quickly. And I can and do fix my cars. There is not a lot of value in this tech at present.
