Apple sent my data to the FBI, says boss of Sci-Hub
- totalZero 5y agoInteresting how aggressively the federal government likes to go after people who aim to disrupt and open up the research business. I found this piece about the industry to be a rousing read: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jun/27/profitable-business-scientific-publishing-bad-for-science https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jun/27/profitable-b... Robert Maxwell is the father of Ghislaine Maxwell. Not sure if that's relevant but it's certainly thought-provoking.
- malwarebytess 5y agoI wonder, is it because USA holds research to be important to national security?
- DeliriumTrigger 5y agoYou are saying that if research ie. national security should be compromised it should be for profit? Sounds American alright.
- totalZero 5y agoI am not sure that national security plays much of a role when the alternative to free research is paywalled research. If you can pay to download a research paper on JSTOR, how confidential is it really?
- 1cvmask 5y agoThis scam is well known and self inflicted. Those with the money and responsibility have relinquished total control. Reminds me of the similar arrangement of Formula 1 with Bernie Ecclestone when in fact the car manufacturers should have been the sole beneficiary of all the revenues. Of course there probably was some greasing the palms in the beginning to create this racket and flywheel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Ecclestone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Ecclestone
- supergirl 5y agoI assume she is not living in the US, otherwise she'd be in jail by now. it should not be legal for the FBI to get data on her directly from Apple. at least it should go through the law enforcement of her country of residence.
