The "right to repair" folks do seem somewhat oblivious to security / scam concerns.
Since I've had first hand experience of supposedly genuine or same OEM apple replacement batteries being absolutely anything BUT genuine or similar spec (ie, total trash) the screams of these right to repair folks when apple alerts the user to a non-apple battery ring pretty damn hollow.
I'm convinced there was an organized used iphone resale setup where folks would cram these crap batteries in and resell the phone showing it had great battery life - when a bit later you were screwed.
This is just once example. I'm aware that users would buy phones, strip parts, then file applecare claims. Sure, activation lock meant the phones wouldn't work, but then they could take fingerprint sensors etc and link them to new devices. Cue up the cries again if apple does any notification that you are linking in non-apple or grey channel parts.
Same thing with activation lock itself - lots of complaining about it.
None of this takes into account apples own USERs view. They want activation lock. They WANT a warning that they are being sold a phone with a crap 3rd party battery.
Seriously - make a with a user replaceable battery and memory and upgradeable storage etc. If users want this - they will flock to you.
- rasz 5y ago>screams of these right to repair folks when apple alerts the user to a non-apple battery ring pretty damn hollow you might be oblivious to the fact this Apple Alert is not about fake battery - it also pops up if you insert Genuine battery from another brand new iphone. Battery alert is about Control over the phone user believes to own.
- zepto 5y ago> it also pops up if you insert Genuine battery from another brand new iphone. It’s almost always going to be triggered by a replacement battery of unknown origin and almost never by someone taking a battery from a brand new iPhone, so this is an obvious red herring.
- rasz 5y ago> almost never by someone taking a battery from a brand new iPhone This is incorrect. There is no almost, all original Apple brand new batteries will trigger scareware until battery is crypto paired with the phone using RepairCal. Oh, and you cant see battery cycle count to be sure you got a good battery, apps showing cycle count were removed from app store for some absolutely coincidental and unrelated reason.
- zepto 5y ago> This is incorrect. Not at all. It will almost never happen because it’s not something people generally do. It’s a meaningless red herring.
- rasz 5y agoYes, just like farmers never self service modern John Deere tractors, that just "isnt something people generally do". Talking about self service is a meaningless red herring, clearly!
- zepto 5y agoThat’s not an analogy. We’re not talking about self service - we’re talking about the red herring of taking batteries from new iPhones to put them in old ones. That isn’t an example of “self service”. It isn’t something people do. If you are doing self service, nothing stops you from ignoring the warning if you know what you are doing.
- parineum 5y agoIt would have been trivial for Apple to sign the batteries as genuine instead they tie it to a specific serial number. The level of effort to those two solutions is very similar. The decision of which to do is a business decision.
- zepto 5y agoThe signature would just be cloned.
- whoknowswhat11 5y agoYou might be oblivious and totally clueless that a chip can be re-used, it will be. Chips from used apple phone batteries will be slapped onto the bogus batteries and installed. I mean - seriously, how do you think half the printer ink folks defeat the DRM there? Why do they want your old (original) cartridges? Really depressing to see the level of discourse here on HN - and not understanding how if it can be scammed it will be. Seriously, people will take apple phones, pull and replace a part like a battery and return it even.
- rasz 5y agoThat would mean crypto signing battery to cpu is useless, so why do it? I dont give a flying duck about Apple being scammed by someone returning dummy phone with fake parts. Its in Apple interest to inspect what they refund. I do however care about sustainable repairable hardware. I dont want disposable future Apple is selling us on. New macbooks are just like their phones, consumable good calculated to fail in max 3 years once you run out of SSD cycles.
