Homebrew purges FUSE packages
- geofft 5y agoWow, I didn't realize that OSXFUSE / macFUSE wasn't open-source. Good for Homebrew - the fact that distributions check these sorts of things so users don't have to worry about it is a very good argument in favor of distributions.
- soraminazuki 5y agoBad for users because the only way to install these software now is to build from source. All of the removed formulae is open source software, and now these software have no place in Homebrew either as formulae or Casks. Besides, the FUSE formulae would've been removed even if OSXFUSE / macFUSE were open source. The real reason these formulae were removed was because the Homebrew maintainers wanted to remove the ability for Homebrew formulae to depend on Casks. Since OSXFUSE / macFUSE can never be packaged as a Homebrew formula, the removal would've went through regardless.
- syntheticcdo 5y agoIs non-open-source allowed in Casks?
- grozzle 5y agoIt is. There are casks for things like Google Chrome (as opposed to Chromium).
- ggm 5y agoEmotive headline: casks still available.
- soraminazuki 5y agoI searched the Homebrew Cask[1] repository, and 0 out of the 29 removed formulae were available in there as Casks. Could you care to tell me the specific installation procedure for any one of them? I'd be surprised if the deleted formulae would ever be available as Casks because Homebrew Cask does not accept open source software that meets either of the following criteria[2]: * The software is CLI only * The software doesn't provide official binaries [1]: https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask [2]: https://github.com/Homebrew/brew/blob/master/docs/Acceptable-Casks.md https://github.com/Homebrew/brew/blob/master/docs/Acceptable...

- soraminazuki 5y agoNot relevant at all. > Emotive headline: casks still available. You implied that the headline was lying by omission because the 29 formulae that were removed are still available as Casks. So where exactly are any single one of the 29 Casks?
- ggm 5y agoOk. My bad. I assumed the casks included the upper layers. So, the casks of 29 fuse layers are gone. Are they now impossible to install? The point of casks for osxfuse and Macfuse being to permit the layers to work. Aside from complexity, what's the actual problem? Do you believe these specific fs can't be made eg by hand?
- soraminazuki 5y agoThe removed packages would now have to be built from source. They are fully open source projects developed independently of macFUSE. As such, these projects now have no place in Homebrew because they're not eligible for Casks either. So installing them would mean no support from Homebrew. No binary builds, no automatic updates, none of the fixes that package managers often apply to make software install cleanly. The removed packages were quite popular too according to Homebrew's opt-out analytics[1] and included things like ntfs-3g, sshfs, ext4fuse, and encfs. - soraminazuki 5y agoIt bothers me that the removed formulae were popular according to Homebrew's opt-out analytics[1] and yet the PR to deprecate them was merged in a single day without user discussion[2]. Among those removed are ntfs-3g, sshfs, ext4fuse, and encfs.
