Every automaker is investing in many many different alternative drive train types. Volvo and Daimler are not putting all their money on black per se, just diversifying their R&D like everyone. Porsche and Toyota for instance are dumping money into synthetic fuel, but it doesn't mean they're anticipating any sort of synthetic fuel boom, they're just trying to be ready if it happens.
