Apple parts ways with recent hire Antonio Garcia-Martinez amid backlash
- zenosmosis 5y agoIt is obvious that women and people of color are far superior, and deserve better, than white people. Get over it.
- flobosg 5y agoHis surnames are not hyphenated, by the way.
- mc32 5y agoFirst of all, whatever your beliefs, keep your mouth shut. In today's world of infinite recollection any statement you said will be used against you, whether you said it in jest, while inebriated or just role-playing (goodguy/badguy). The leaked statements are insensitive but not beyond what many people say (they may not target women in their screeds, but they may target "acceptable" boogeypeople (non elite, non smart, whatever, blue collar thinking, etc.) and it's totally accepted. If we were to hold everyone in companies to these purity tests, overnight, 50% of company staffs would be gone. Keep your opinions to yourself. Don't joke. The mob, if they don't like you, will come for you. If they like you, like, you know, a certain governor who wore blackface and remains in office, well, it's okay. It was Okay for Cuomo too despite all the rumors about harassment, etc... but it would have hurt the party image during an election cycle. Cycle over and he's in season. It's up to HR and management to make hiring decisions, it's not for the line staff to go on crusades ousting "bad hires".
- Spartan-S63 5y agoThe line staff certainly can say they don't want to work with someone over past behaviors or comments. That's when it gets elevated to an HR problem because you have a large swath of people not wanting to work with someone. Your choices as an HR department are to get rid of the person no one wants to work with, or get rid of everyone who's lodged complaint. Obviously, the lower cost to the company comes from getting rid of the problem employee. This has nothing to do with keeping your mouth shut. It has everything to do with becoming less biased, less prejudiced people, and generally being good.
- mc32 5y agoI want to work with good people too. As long as their personal peccadilloes don't spill into work, why should I care if I don't agree with you on a multitude of issues, political, moral and otherwise? We're employed to provide value to the company, not to feel comfortable with whom we work with. Presumably this person can function and execute their duties despite any personal beliefs that don't align with those of others. Working with fragile people can be more of an issue than working with an asshole. At least with an asshole you know the boundaries. Do these people watch sports (and know how players behave) do they listen to everyday music and listen to the lyrics? They are trying to build a Stepford Wives society. Every imperfect human jettisoned and replaced by a perfect model. It's delusion.
- alkonaut 5y ago> Presumably this person can function and execute their duties despite any personal beliefs that don't align with those of others. An obvious problem here would be if the beliefs don’t align with the duties, not just he beliefs of other people. That could include e.g people with a record of misogynist views in management positions. Would I trust this person to give equal opportunity?
- joshmanders 5y agoSo I murder someone you love, serve my time and get out of jail, then immediately get a job at your company, working directly with you, you have no problem with that?
- mc32 5y agoYou’re forgetting that 50% of these agitators are also “murders” only they murdered the “right” people. In other words at least half of the people complaining about this guy have their own demons they fight and ugly ideas that they have but just haven’t been as careless of haven’t been reported for saying similar statements about other populations (on the other side of the abortion issue, maybe fervent believers, etc).
- deanCommie 5y agoIt's a bit of a leap from "Don't write a book about the tech industry trashing people within it, then keep trying to work within it" to "Keep your opinions to yourself."
- bioinformatics 5y agoIs this reason enough for Latinx racism?
- zepto 5y ago“One has to wonder if whoever at Apple hired Garcia Martinez hadn't read the book” They make it sound like it’s negligent not to read the books written by people you hire. That’s a very weird innuendo.
- dragonwriter 5y ago> They make it sound like it’s negligent not to read the books written by people you hire. Given the way employers have taken to trolling through social media profiles of low level hires, overlooking published, mass market books of management hires (at least, given his resume, I assume Martinez was hired into a leadership position; the specifics in all coverage have been somewhat lacking) whose attitudes, both real and perceived, are substantial employee relations issues, does seem quite negligent.
- dehrmann 5y ago> management hires (at least, given his resume, I assume Martinez was hired into a leadership position) Maybe not. It's not clear: > sources said he was hired for a lower-level engineering role
- zepto 5y ago> overlooking published, mass market books of management hires Who do you think has time to read the books written by job applicants?
