Ask HN: Email Service
Is there a good alternate for gmail? Since everything requires 2FA and Google has no customer service if you get locked out?
- zenosmosis 5y agoBuild one. Call it fancymcpoopoo.
- leephillips 5y agoInstall Postfix on your server and use mutt as a client. It’s the only way to get email to work the way you want it to.
- fancymcpoopoo 5y agoI'm afraid I don't have the desire/bandwith to manage this myself. I just want something more reliable than google. maybe I should just go back to school to rely on the university.
- leephillips 5y agoI think people on HN occasionally recommend fastmail.com. It’s not free, but cheaper than university.
- mimixco 5y agoRunning your own email server is a security nightmare. It's almost asking to get hacked. I wouldn't recommend that in most cases.
- leephillips 5y agoOpening any port on your server is asking for intrusion attempts. You will get a constant stream of them, and they will all fail, unless you do something really dumb. Fail2ban is probably a good idea.
- ALittleLight 5y agoI've recently started using protonmail myself. It's not (yet) my main email, but I haven't had any problems with it so far. The free tier has some limits, like on emails sent per day, size of inbox, number of email filters you can have, etc. If I were actually going to use it as my personal email I'd go for the paid tier, about 5 dollars a month I think.
- mimixco 5y agoWe've used ProtonMail for two years on the Visionary (largest) plan with multiple custom domains and super tight security settings that no regular mailbox can offer. I'd definitely recommend it.
- adamhearn 5y agoProtonMail is awesome! A bit on the high side pricing wise, especially for storage. I find a lot of value in it. Checkout anonaddy as well. It’s my preferred forwarding service.
- LinuxBender 5y agoFastmail [1] is a great alternative to Gmail. I pointed a few domains at it for family members to use. [1] - https://www.fastmail.com/ https://www.fastmail.com/
- Dah00n 5y agoBuy a domain and use your own server or a hosting company's mail.

- bpmedley 5y agoI use tuffmail (https://www.tuffmail.com https://www.tuffmail.com).
- tofukid 5y agoProtonmail. Emails are end-to-end encrypted at rest so sysadmins and others can’t access them. Fastmail is also a good provider, but you won’t get the same peace of mind as protonmail.
- p0d 5y agoNot an alternate to Gmail but I use my own domain name for important mail. So I'm not tied (too much) to any provider. At the moment I use gmail as I have 10 free gsuite business accounts...signed up before they started charging
