I didn't expect the area I live in to be doing sewage surveillance, but I was pleasantly surprised about a year ago to hear that they were. Every few weeks, I would see an article that would say something like "Based on the monitoring of sewage levels, we expect reported COVID cases to rise/fall in the coming weeks", and they were always right, about two weeks ahead of reported case counts.
