I wanted to shop local and support my community so I went to my local convenience store <4 KM round trip rather than making the 45 KM round trip to Walmart for my groceries.
What I found was dissapointing, they were just reselling stuff that they bought from Walmart at a 125% to 300% inflated price. EG: Walmart sells 3×white bread loafs for $7 CAD my local store charges $4.65 CAD per loaf and I suspect they were previously frozen.
I understand that without local support these buisnesses will not survive but if all they are doing is buying from a national chain what value are they really providing? They both pay minium wage and there are no local taxes in my town, only regional, provincial and federal.
This may seem like Im being obtuse but I felt like my good intentions were being taken advantage of at my local store.
PS: Was the name "NearBuy" already taken? I sometimes have problems reading words with two meanings and I'm sure I'm not alone. "Close" is one of those words that makes me think of a liquidation store.
