I'll get to put this to the test in another month or so as I move from DC to NYC. It helps that DC is almost as expensive, everything I've seen so far apartment-wise looks like I'll be paying the same amount of money for a 2 bedroom that I'm currently paying for a 1 bedroom (albeit smaller overall square footage). I'll also have an extra 200 a month from not having a car (insurance and parking), and most other costs seem to be about the same. If I were moving from somewhere cheaper, maybe I'd feel differently.
