Recently, I sent a longer-form announcement email and I think it really benefited from simple formatting. Headers that were visually distinct made it easier to parse, and in one place I set an image to float right which I felt made it less disruptive. I even set a max-width on the whole email, which I think works far better than the hard-wrapped text that some people write.
