Are employers entitled to labor at whatever price they want to pay?
- josephcsible 5y agoNo, employers are supposed to have to pay the market rate. The problem is that the government paying people to do nothing significantly inflates the market rate.
- mentalpiracy 5y agoYou’re making this comment without realizing that you’re pre-supposing the market rate was “correct” in the first place. Which is a big proposition to just accept on its face, considering how the US government for example has been subsidizing the workforce of companies like Walmart and McDonalds, who actively encourage their own employees apply for food stamps and other social welfare programs - because their wage is so low that even though they’re working, they’re still qualifying for poverty programs! Wages have not matched productivity for decades. To assume that the market was working correctly before this extra unemployment payout program started is misguided.
- standardUser 5y ago"No, employers are supposed to have to pay the market rate." Supposed to? Says who? I say, employers are supposed to have to pay enough for a person to support themselves without government assistance. If we allow businesses to pay below a living wage, then the government is simply subsidizing their labor costs.
