I don't know if people are working that much more or are just being forced to sit at their desk or in meetings just to satisfy the myth of productivity. Like for my current job, I work 8-4 since my lunch is a paid benefit. Even then I don't have that much on my plate mostly because I'm waiting on others to answer my messages on Teams for business edge cases with code or database changes. Aside from that, there will be times where even in new development I'm just puzzling over an edge case before tapping someone on it to ensure I have the problem fully understood to me (no point in nagging people who wouldn't know much better). I think it's a bit of a and b (a being some people are definitely overworked, and b being some of us are just pretending to work to just make the numbers look good to our employers even when we've already got the work done and just could do something else like skill training or take a short day).
