Hardworking and reliable people are valuable assists to a community, and I suspect some aspect of this is wired into our brains. So it’s natural. Working so that others may get rich at our own expense is relatively new, and it’s largely a marketing message, done by those who are getting rich, and they are tapping into what’s wired into our brains.
