- bawolff 5y agoArguably, the USSR also got lots of the spoils and emerged a super power.
- GenerocUsername 5y agoAnd 100 years from now, China will have won WW2 with their subtle but very important sideline involvments
- booleanbetrayal 5y agoI think the clear distinction here, is that in absence of a reconstruction effort, you do not have stability, and war continues unabated. Maybe you call it something different or attribute it to different actors, but the true delineation of conflict is a tangible and lasting peace. I think that the US demonstrated its victory as it helped to coordinate and furnish that peace in a manner that supported its own interests at the time.
- simonblack 5y agoSeeing that the Chinese War Against Japan lasted over eight years the Chinese very likely have a good claim to that title. (That's eight years at least. Some people count that war as between 1931 and 1945, so some 14 years.)
- booleanbetrayal 5y agoDefinitely, but they were geographically and philosophically isolated from several traditional European power centers, unlike their US capitalist counterparts. So if Europe is the theater and ultimately part of the prize, I think the US was able to flourish in influence from the start given its more advantageous positioning.
- harperlee 5y agoHistory is written by the victors.
- ransom1538 5y agoUgh. Waiting for this cliche.
- ikerdanzel 5y agoUSSR won WW2. Without USA, USSR would have beaten both Nazy Germany and Imperial Japan 100%, just perhaps will take 2 years longer and maybe another 10mils dead. USA role at that time was basically to stop the spread of communism (it was a prelude to cold war). It was a race to cover as much ground as possible to avoid western europe fall to USSR. On Pacific front, despite what USA school books narative, Japan didn't surrender to USA because of that 2 nukes. It surrendered because by then, the red army had amassed at least a million soldiers at Manchuria and about to invade Japan. Japan then surrendered to USA as they know what USSR would do from what their lost Manchuria territory showed. USA is a kinder "lord" to submit to. Just imagine there isnt D-Day, USSR would still be able to sweep down and destroy whatever left of Nazi forces without a need a single allied soldiers present. The same is true for Japan. The role of USA in WW2 was to ensure democracy being defended. South Korea, Japan, and Germany today can attest to what USA did back then, not to win WW2 (though that was the objectives), but consequentially to defend western ideal and democracy ala prelude to cold war and Vietnam.
