I've been experimenting with throwaway ec2 dev boxes. My environment setups are scripted for setting up a new instance but I usually stop and restart the same one. The instance shuts itself off using a cloudwatch alarm after 5 minutes of idle time. My IDE is vscode using remote connections, and a ssh client. Startup time is less than 20 seconds and I scripted that too. Cost: about $0.15 for a few hours of work. Less vscode, it will work from any hardware built withing the last 10-15 years that has a ssh client. Edit: that has a ssh client (not just a Linux terminal)
