A better word than "dismal" might be "stagnant". Assuming you think we are better off today than 1000 years ago, it seems that calibrating to perfect conservatism is not the right approach. At the same time, that's not a blank check to unleash whatever fasionable idea on hundreds of millions of people, as that has gone horribly wrong as well.
