What specifically is nihilistic about the comment?
- wolverine876 5y agoFor example, > The times don't change all that much. The implication, in my mind, is that there's nothing we can change; it takes away all agency to improve our world.
- andrewjl 5y agoI see a different implication, no matter how much change occurs our perception of circumstances will inevitably regress to the mean. This is consistent with what the discovery of the hedonic treadmill tells us about human nature.
- wolverine876 5y agoI don't see it. People in WWII, today in Syria, etc. felt the same about their lives as people during peacetime? Personally, I perceive the current world as very different than a few years ago.

That perhaps progress has more to do with the things we legally bind ourselves to as a society such as equality, solidarity and opportunity. No one here has said there aren't times which are "better" or "worse" than others. Merely that it's not worthwhile to judge that on the dubious metric of decadence.
