How many washing machines should a family have? Less than one
- ncmncm 5y agoStuff, in modern life, is much cheaper than scheduling access to it. Anything you use for hours a week is an obvious thing to own. A shared barbeque grill is useless if everybody wants it the same day -- unless they have a big common celebration on, say, July 4. Which is a popular idea, or was when your friends and family all lived within shouting distance, or arrowshot. Not so much, anymore. But tool rentals are a thing. As are tool libraries, in enlightened places.
- curmudgeon22 5y agoHow do families get access to this washing machine? I mean, shared laundry rooms in apartments are one thing, but it’s no realistic to move a washing machine 5 times a week.
- yuppie_scum 5y agoI have some city dwelling friends who rely on laundromats that will do the wash dry and fold service for them, that sounds pretty awesome and it’s not all that expensive even apparently. If I went back to a basic apartment I’d be doing that.

Objects often include kitchen appliances, tools, gardening equipment and seeds, electronics, toys and games, art, science kits, craft supplies, musical instruments, and recreational equipment. Especially appropriate are objects that are useful occasionally but cumbersome to store, such as specialized cookware or niche technology items."
- thesuperbigfrog 5y agoDepends on your family's needs. My neighbors have five children with the two youngest in diapers. They use cloth diapers to save money and reduce waste. I am pretty sure they are running at least one load per day, perhaps more.
- maxharris 5y agoMy wife and I run about a load a day. We like having clean sheets, towels and clothes. If you want to take it, you'll have to pry our washing machine from our cold, dead hands.
