Cyberattack Forces a Shutdown of a Top U.S. Pipeline Operator
- McTossOut 5y agoIn other news, Tesla.
- derwiki 5y agoNo details beyond vague Solarwind references. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
- sen 5y agoAt what point are all the China/Russia vs USA cyberattacks considered a "war"?
- elliekelly 5y agoIf this pipeline was shut down through any other means I think it undoubtedly would be considered an act of war. I guess because everyone does it no one wants to be the first to label it an act of aggression.
- atkailash 5y agoUnless I missed something, the shutdown wasn’t caused directly by the attack, but in response to. It’s a subtle but important distinction.
- ta988 5y agoWhen someone's tit is much bigger than the tat that caused it. Also US probably doesnt want to get into a war with US (and China neither) but both want to mess with the other just below the larger conflict level.
- dakial1 5y agoMy guess is that cyberattacks are threated the same way as spying, so they would deal with these things silently and violently (for the operators), but never generate a straight out war.
- boomboomsubban 5y agoFirst, there is absolutely nothing in this article saying who is responsible for this attack. Second, at most it's part of the economic warfare that the US openly engages in.
- shillforhumanty 5y agoRight? If blowing up a nuclear plant wasn't enough, what's it gonna take already damn?! We want blood! We want blood!
- williesleg 5y agoGotta switch back to trains. That's Warren Buffett's company, the trains.
- podgaj 5y agoI am sure it has NOTHING to do with this leak... https://newrepublic.com/article/161498/huntersville-north-carolina-colonial-pipeline-spill https://newrepublic.com/article/161498/huntersville-north-ca... Just another PR stunt?
- aardvarkr 5y agoIs shutting down your entire operations, costing you millions if not billions, what you would classify as a or stunt?
- neandrake 5y agoI’m not sure what commenter means by PR stunt but it is interesting that this company had a massive (and massively under-reported) pipeline leak scandal in the past year. I imagine Colonial is still managing that crisis and now have this new one to deal with. If they’re needing to do repairs or assessments for the earlier pipeline leaks now might be an opportunity to do so under a different headline which can blame an external adversary instead of themselves.
- podgaj 5y agoDid you read the article I linked to? I live down there and you have NO IDEA what this company has been up to. I mean what could be worse, having to shut down because of another leak or them blaming an outside agitator for shutting down the pipeline?
