Ask HN: Any way to get verified geolocation?
I’m building an app that relies on users being at a location. Location data is easily spoofed.
Do you know of any way to realistically make it too difficult to spoof geolocation for most people?
- LinuxBender 5y agoAFAIK the best you can do is choose one of the GeoIP databases unless you are also verifying the persons credit card number and tax-payer ID. Commercial and private VPN's are quite prolific now and some of the commercial VPN's will just appear as a residential cable/fiber user somewhere. A persons IP address is at best a suggestion to where they may be or have chosen to be.
